The Resort
Located on a south-facing plateau at an altitude of 1860m, Alpe d'Huez, aptly named the Sun Island, it enjoys generous amounts of sunshine and a particularly active microclimate: up to 7H30 of sunshine in December, up to at 11H of sunshine in April.
Alpe d'Huez has been growing in infrastructure since 1936 and stands at 1860 meters above sea level on the “massif des Grandes rousses”. The Pic Blanc, at 3,330 meters high, offers a spectaculer panorama, on various mountains: the “Rateau”, the “Meije”, the “Muzelle”, the “Aiguilles d'Arves”, the “chaine Belledonne” and “Mont Blanc”.
The villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, La Garde, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany, and Villard Reculas are the guarantors of mountain life. They are the roots of "gens d’en haut" (People from the higher lands)
The traditions of the Oisans are expressed through their gastronomy and farmlands, also the presence of some 370 cows and 2000 sheep grazing on the 10,000 hectares of pastures come ski slopes in winter.
The Huizats have always grazed their herds on these pastures, giving its name to the resort
: the "alpe" of the village of Huez. But above all, these herds benefit the resort rehabilitating the slopes by grazing the various ski areas and levelling the grass, they prevent the avalanche-prone too much grass for the first snowfall.
