Les 3 Sophie

located at 1000 metres above sea level in the French Alps, halfway between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, we discover the ski resort of Morzine where we cultivate the authentic charm of a village while keeping its Savoyard character. Morzine has kept its atypical look, its warm welcome, which is, for its part, perpetuated from generation to generation. This resort has also preserved its art of living, a living heritage, composed of mountain traditions and recipes typically Haute-Savoyard …

Located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the largest ski areas in the world, it links 12 resorts with more than 600km of skiing. This space offers the originality of bringing together two cultures by associating a Swiss side and a French side. In summer, the trails become marked trails for mountain biking and hiking, and invite you to escape freely. A perfect resort to relax with friends or family since it has the Famille Plus Montagne label.

Ideally located in a popular area, from the gondola Les Prodains, the residence « Les 3 Sophie » allows direct access to the station Avoriaz and all the slopes of the Portes du Soleil. To reach the center of the village in a few minutes, free shuttles pass at the foot of the residence. Composed of 3 cottages, they have 7 apartments each ranging from 1 bedroom to 3 bedrooms in a mountain spirit. Furnished and equipped, the apartments combine modernity and tradition.

Morzine's village is set at an altitude of 1,000m and surrounded by undulating summer pastures that become pleasantly rolling mainly intermediate slopes in winter, linked to similar terrain in neighbouring Les Gets and attractively bordered by trees. However, the resort's low altitude means pistes are not always open all the way down, so booking an early or late-season holiday here can be risky.

After the construction of a cable car in 1934, not a lot happened in Morzine until February 1960, when the town clubbed together to send promising local racer Jean Vuarnet to the Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley in California. He came home clutching the gold medal for downhill.

On his homecoming, Morzine’s elders gave Vuarnet the task of creating the high-altitude ski station of Avoriaz above it. He was also tasked with developing links with neighbouring resorts on both sides of the Swiss frontier to create the huge Portes du Soleil ski area.

It’s a bit sad that Vuarnet is now much better known for his sunglasses than either his extraordinary feat of sporting prowess or for his ski area legacy.

As well as being a good base for families, Morzine has a lively après scene with plenty of bars. For those who enjoy off-slope activity, or are not so dedicated to full days on the slopes, there's a reasonable amount of other activities to fill the hours. These include ice-diving beneath a lake, nature discovery tours, snowmobiling, tobogganing, snowshoeing and shopping. There's also a world-class ice rink and a large swimming pool.
